Bouldering in the Peak District

Painters of every skill level – including beginners – will discover how to plan and create abstract artworks. Part of the schedule will be spent in the open air, working on structured activities in the open. These initial charcoal drawings and watercolour studies will then be developed in the workspace, with participants creating a number of interpretive scenes in acrylics to be exhibited in the village. The group has sole use of the hotel, which is set around an central patio and has a roof terrace with panoramic vistas over the countryside. The cost includes five days of painting tuition; full board; and an trip to the local castle and additional local sights.

Plant-Based Culinary in Portugal

This Mediterranean culinary holiday, set on a villa by the river in the central Algarve, is inspired by the vegetarian dishes of celebrated cooks. Attendees will learn to produce selection of small dishes, attend a hands-on falafel session, perfect mid-morning meals such as shakshuka, and make substantial main courses such as a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. There are trips to the local market and a local vineyard to taste local vintages, combined with leisure time for strolls by the Funcho River, to unwind on the terrace or take a dip in the infinity pool. The accommodation, a renovated rural property, has five bedrooms, plus glamping tents in the grounds.

Street Dance in Buckinghamshire

This energetic camp is an energizing, welcoming weekend adults’ street dance camp in High Wycombe. The daily schedule throughout the camp is a high-energy group warmup, then several 90-minute classes covering various street dance styles, then an hour-long jam to demonstrate new moves. Dancers are split into groups based on skill level, so it is perfect for those who are completely new to popping and locking, all the way to experienced performers or instructors. This event doesn’t include accommodation but there are several places to stay nearby, and it is 23-35 minutes by train into London.

Maritime Singing Weekend in Cornwall

This coastal town is the excellent location for a maritime music retreat. Guests will be taught historic sailing songs from a folk singer and vocal coach, and have a go at composing original ones. There will be vocal warmups, breathing exercises, stagecraft advice and a final evening concert. The holiday is held in a country house with views of the bay. All meals are included, such as a Cornish cream tea on arrival, cooked or continental breakfasts, lunches to go and evening meals. Grog, alas, is not provided. Writing in Greece

Writer and tutor Greg Mosse leads the regular sessions on this writing retreat. He explores everything from story structure, characters, locations and tension, to submitting work to publishers. A co-host, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will participate in special sessions at the start and finish of the retreat. The holiday is based at a village-style hotel in Vamos at the foot of the Lefka Ori – 10 private accommodations surround a garden and pool (non-writing partners are welcome to come along). On the final evening, budding authors mark the occasion with a concert in the garden and a final meal.

Introduction to Apiculture in Wales

The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth runs a wide range of programs on sustainability: from creating habitats to upcycling. This weekend introduction will help participants get to grips with the fundamentals of apiary management, study the life cycle of honeybees and discover their environmental benefits. It is aimed at produce “ecologically mindful beekeepers”. This course is also a chance to de-stress in the centre's sustainably managed woodlands, which are home to polecats, otters, dormice, bats and uncommon bird species. Accommodation the night before is 80 pounds, and all meals and lodging during the course is £97.

Sailing for Novices in the Blackwater Estuary

These new summer sailing weekends are spent on Wayfarers and Dufours on the Blackwater estuary. They are designed for adult beginners learning the ropes or more experienced mariners who want a refresher. Participants can hone their helming, strengthen their nautical skills and work towards the recognized levels one to three in a fun, welcoming environment. There are day-only and overnight options, staying in simple dorms in the waterside sailing school. The non-residential package provides packed lunches, while the overnight option includes two nights’ accommodation and all meals, from hearty breakfasts to BBQ dinners.
