A substantial bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the calendar year.

The winning bid for the 243kg fish was placed by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi chain, which manages outlets throughout Japan and abroad.

"The year's tuna signals a prosperous start," remarked the company president, a familiar bidder at the annual January sale.

Referred to as the Tuna King, this industry figure is renowned for making record bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.

Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

After the auction, the winner told journalists that he was "surprised at the winning bid," adding, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price soared before you knew it."

This most recent acquisition exceeds his previous historic purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Even after previously remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to break his personal record yet again.

A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids

The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally characterized by exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be available at its restaurants across Japan.

The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was quickly sliced up for patrons at the bidder's sushi establishments immediately after the auction was finished.

"I sense like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," remarked one elated patron.
