France's Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has handed in his resignation, shortly after his ministers was presented.

The Elysée palace made the announcement after the Prime Minister met Macron for an meeting on the start of the week.

This shock move comes only under four weeks after Lecornu was given the PM role following the downfall of the previous government of François Bayrou.

Parties across the board in the National Assembly had strongly opposed the composition of his ministerial team, which was mostly similar to Bayrou's, and threatened to vote it down.

Pressure for Early Elections and Government Instability

A number of factions are now clamouring for new parliamentary polls, with certain voices demanding Macron to step down as well - although he has repeatedly stated he will not stand down before his time in office finishes in five years from now.

"Macron needs to pick: calling new elections or resignation," said Chenu, one of key representatives of the far right National Rally (RN).

Lecornu - the ex-defense chief and a supporter of Macron - was the fifth premier in under two years.

Background of Government Crisis

French politics has been markedly turbulent since July 2024, when snap parliamentary elections resulted in a deadlocked assembly.

This has made it difficult for any prime minister to obtain required votes to enact new laws.

The former cabinet was rejected in last month after parliament refused to back his fiscal tightening package, which aimed to cut state costs by $51 billion.

Financial Pressures and Market Reaction

France's deficit reached nearly 6% of the economy in the current year and its government debt is 114 percent of GDP.

That is the third highest public debt in the European monetary union after Greece and Italy, and amounting to almost 50,000 euros per person.

Share prices dropped in the French stock market after the news of Lecornu's resignation was released on Monday.
