Gas Detonation Costs Three Carabinieri Amid Property Removal Operation in the Verona Area

Aftermath of the tragic incident
All three victimized members were part of the Italian police force

A trio of officers perished and at least 15 additional individuals got wounded in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property near the city of Verona to carry out an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were arrested at the site and another man who fled subsequent to the explosion was apprehended not long after. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The explosion could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene showed the property left as a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, explained the property was subject to an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the three owners.

Mediators had been sent to speak to the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings set off the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno informed news outlets.

A propane tank had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the incident comprised 11 other members of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.

He thought the explosion had happened on a story above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed Italian media, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the performance of their duties.
