Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is leaving the governing body at OpenAI, just several days after a batch of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became public.
He stated in a release that he was "thankful for the privilege to have contributed, optimistic about the promise of the company, and anticipate tracking their advancement".
The prominent academic, who previously led the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his connections with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released emails revealed that the official communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for accused trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it respected his choice to resign.
"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the perspective he provided to the directors," OpenAI remarked.
Legislative Background
This development comes after the entire Congress of Congress voted on this week to pass a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will afterward proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has indicated he intends to endorse the measure, after modifying his view on the matter following objections from his followers.
Email Contents
A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee last week included numerous well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any criminal activity by those figures.
The communications indicated that the professor and the financier often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to link Summers to notable world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were made available with the public, the former official stated he accepted "total ownership for my poor decision to continue communicating with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to rebuild confidence and repair connections with the persons nearest to me".
Career Background
Summers held leadership roles under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He led the institution from the early 2000s and is still a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public roles previously on this week, he said he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Further Repercussions
Following his statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where he was a researcher, verified that Summers was no longer affiliated with the group.
Summers became part of the leadership of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
