A minimum of 64 individuals were killed in a law enforcement action against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's past.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities reported. More than 80 individuals were detained.

Intense confrontations broke out when around 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Red Command countered with gunfire, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives stated.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "shocked" by the security action, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Raid Aftermath

The slum neighborhoods near the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the main base of a major organised crime groups.

Government representatives confirmed a minimum of 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Resident Accounts

Community members have likened the hillside area - home to about 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the raid started.

Gang Growth

The Red Command group have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police stated over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the mission, along with numerous weapons.

Mission Context

The joint operation by civil and military police follows a year-long investigation.

Numerous alleged criminals are considered participants in an organization from the Pará state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
