As Macron declared his intention to formally acknowledge Palestinian statehood, it provoked a strong backlash from Israeli leadership and stirred a diplomatic crisis with the US.

Benjamin Netanyahu issued a letter asserting France of neglecting to address rising antisemitism in the country. Netanyahu claimed that the move would only intensify antisemitic sentiments.

Reacting, France’s government dismissed the Israeli leader’s comments as “unacceptable” and reiterated that the nation takes no lessons on how to combat antisemitism.

America’s envoy, however, supported Israel in an open letter, claiming that recognising Palestine would risk Jewish people in France and empower militants.

France formally confronted the US envoy, declaring that his remarks were “unacceptable” and disregarded diplomatic protocols of non-interference.

It is true, anti-Jewish sentiment is a major concern in France, with an extensive background of prejudice and hostile acts. Following the events of October 2023, numbers of antisemitic acts have risen sharply.

The nation has also had difficulty dealing with systemic racism, such as incidents against Muslim individuals. In spite of ongoing calls for change, lacking institutions exist to fight institutional discrimination.

Yet these shortcomings should not invalidate the argument for recognising Palestine as a state. Asserting that criticism of Israel is synonymous with anti-Jewish hatred is a misleading narrative.

Worldwide, most nations already acknowledge Palestinian statehood. Why is France’s move remarkable is that this represents an unprecedented move by a major Western power.

Considering the continuing violence in Gaza, where thousands been killed and entire areas are leveled, recognising Palestinian statehood seems a necessary duty.

The Israeli government, however, continues to expand outposts in Palestinian land, flouting global norms. This policy lead to questions about the practicality of a viable Palestinian state.

He is scheduled to give a formal announcement at the UN next week. But some wonder: Should France not enact more concrete steps, such as restrictions against Israel?

Even with international condemnation and accusations of war crimes, the country continues to benefit from arms assistance and economic privileges from European nations.

The French government has been accused of sending military equipment to Israel, even as denouncing the violence in Gaza. That double standard hurts the legitimacy of Macron’s announcement.

The timing furthermore prompts doubts about Macron’s intentions. In the wake of losing political leverage, Macron could be attempting a mark on the world stage.

Recognising sovereignty in the past would have had an impact. Acting at this moment, however, feels as an opportunistic gesture more than an authentic effort toward a resolution.
