The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Journey with a Touch of Family-Friendly Tween Romance
Throughout this animated journey for preteens, the fairy community focuses on gathering teeth from slumbering children and placing gold beneath where they sleep. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more curious about the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who provide metal as payment. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the ugly creature he had imagined.
An Unlikely Bond and Shared Threat
Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of young love (even though it remains very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy groups are separated from each other, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to bring people together. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, given to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are allegedly stupid, foul-smelling, and backward, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.
Of course, this scenario needs a shared foe to unite against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, though not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Overall Impression
You won’t find very many animated films aimed at the viewer group that is beginning to have first crushes, but aren’t yet mature enough for the content 14-year-olds are watching instead of Twilight. If your child falls into this age group, this is unlikely to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.
The Tooth Fairy Story releases in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
