The UK airline will offer free fast onboard connectivity via space-based deal

Passengers on the airline can soon use high-speed internet onboard without charge due to a new agreement involving SpaceX's satellite company.

Complimentary plus Fast Internet Across the Board

The airline stated that the no-cost, “reliable and lightning-fast” internet provision from the satellite provider will be offered to passengers flying coach, business, or premium cabins from next month.

Broad Deployment Throughout Multiple Carriers

The holding organization for British Airways, the airline group, announced it had reached an deal involving Starlink to offer internet services for over 500 planes operated by its operators, which also include the Irish airline, Iberia, and the low-cost airline.

Smooth Wifi from Boarding through Landing

The airline stated that this rollout for the service was part of a £7bn “transformation” initiative and would deliver uninterrupted wifi coverage to travelers from boarding through arrival, also when they are flying across seas or remote regions.

Passengers can connect numerous electronics while they will not need a separate password.

“Gamechanging for British Airways and passengers, improving the journey in the air our flights through providing them smooth wifi from gate to gate.”

Current Internet Services

Basic wifi access is currently offered to British Airways passengers across nearly all of their planes through the .air system.

Participants in BA’s frequent flyer program may send messages and text-only emails during flights without paying, whereas passengers who want to watch audio, movies, and films throughout the journey if not travelling in first class may be charged between £4.99 and £21.99 for one wifi package.

SpaceX’s System

The provider operates a constellation of many thousands with spacecraft and is managed by Elon Musk’s company.

Recent Upgrades for the Airline

The airline's leadership has been working to revitalize operations around following years of financial constraints, system failures, labor disputes, plus staff cuts.

BA explained that use of smart technology contributed to the airline to bring its on-time performance to record highs from over a decade ago.

Financial Results

In August, the carrier announced a jump for financial performance during H1 of this year, helping to push IAG’s profit higher.

Additional Starlink Partnerships

This news follows shortly following wireless provider Virgin Media O2 said it was working with the satellite provider to improve cellular coverage across remote areas in Britain, by allowing consumers to easily link mobile devices through space-based systems when no traditional mobile signal can be found.
